08- CHANTIERS NAVALS DE BLAINVILLE

fr.png

Blainville’s Shipyards

Blainville-sur-Orne’s Shipbuilding Company (the “Société des Chantiers Navals Français” in French) was founded in 1917. The paternalistic company ran its own training school and housed most of its employees in estates which they owned, notably in Blainville. A bridge on the canal then enabled the shipyard and village of Blainville to be linked.
The company closed in 1954 to give way to the SAVIEM (a former truck and coach manufacturer), which set up shop in 1955 and has since become Renault Trucks (opposite you, at the back of the harbour basin).
It is the Louis Charles Schiaffino which is being launched on these archive pictures taken on March 27, 1952. The ship notably ensured a regular line between Caen and Algeria by mainly importing Algerian wine. The SNC, or Caen Shipping Company, also entrusted them with the building of their ships, including the Circé II in 1926.
